Tanzania: Commission to Investigate Violations in Mtwara
LEGAL and Human Right Commission and Good Governance is conducting preliminary investigations in Mtwara following events which they term as violation of human rights.
Addressing journalists in Dar es Salaam, the Head of Information Office in the Legal and Human Right Commission and Good Governance, Mr Germanus Joseph, said that the Commission has sent a team to Mtwara to investigate reports of human rights violation.
"We won't say anything now, we are waiting until the preliminary investigation is completed in order to find the truth of the matter as we have received numerous reports which indicate that there are major human rights violations currently taking place," he said.
Mr Joseph said that the Commission is charged with the responsibility of looking into incidents that are related to human rights violation.
"In order to improve our services, we call upon the general public to use their mobile phones to report all incidents of human rights violations, by using our emergency number which is 0754 460259," he said.
He said that members of the Commission are expected to visit rural areas in order to educate and sensitise people on their rights in society.
"We expect to conduct meetings in villages and distribute flyers with information on how to report in case they notice any violation of human rights," he said. He said that the Commission has the responsibility of receiving and investigating claims reported and provide solutions.
